Why I Made this Film?
A message from Justin Smith
I made this film because I believe the commercial influence over medicine has become way out of control. Pharmaceutical companies now do almost all of the research - this means that these companies actually own the data. The pharmaceutical companies control what is published and, just as importantly, what is not published. I believe that our understanding of the risks and benefits associated with medications has been distorted by pharmaceutical companies keen to increase their profits.
The myth that cholesterol causes heart disease and the mass over-prescription of cholesterol-lowering medications is a prime example of this. Millions of people around the world are now taking a medication that is doing them more harm than good.
The pharmaceutical industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year promoting the idea that high cholesterol causes heart disease. These companies routinely misrepresent the scientific evidence in favour of their medications. In this case, statin medications.
Our health authorities should be protecting us from these commercial interests, but they are not.
I believe we can change the current situation by creating more awareness.
A survey, conducted in the United States, found that around half of all the people who take a statin do not use the internet as a source of health information. Therefore, there is a desperate need for an outreach campaign.
I have already received a huge amount of support during the making of this film, for which I am extremely grateful. However, in order to implement an outreach campaign, additional resources are needed.
If you feel that this film is important, please support the outreach campaign by buying a copy of the DVD or making a donation.
The outreach campaign will include:
- a screening tour (USA,UK)
- the translation of the film into several other languages
- follow-up interviews with other leading experts in this field
- the production and distribution of an info pack for patients and doctors
